Bioplatforms Australia drives cancer cures across the nation

Biomedical and clinical sciences, Information and computing sciences, Medical equipment and devices, Public policy

Australia is a global leader in cancer genomics research and translation, driving improved survival rates in children and adults. Bioplatforms Australia provides national genomics and bioinformatics infrastructure supporting collaborative programs that convert genomic data into actionable clinical insights across melanoma, paediatric and adult cancers, including the following national initiatives:

  • The Australian Melanoma Genome Project, co-led by Professor Richard Scolyer, generated whole genome tumour datasets identifying key melanoma drivers and supporting personalised treatment strategies. This work contributed to increased advanced melanoma survival from less than 10% to over 50% in the past decade.
  • Zero Childhood Cancer is Australia’s national precision oncology initiative that genomically evaluates every child with high-risk or relapsed cancer. Thousands of paediatric cancer cases have been analysed and embedded as a national clinical model, improving diagnostic resolution and enabling targeted therapies. Australian BioCommons enabled a partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, accelerating advances in paediatric cancer research and treatment.
  • OMICO PrOSPeCT has genomically profiled more than 20,000 adults with untreatable cancers, matching patients to precision oncology trials and therapies.

Together with NCRIS partners Phenomics Australia, ARDC and NCI, Bioplatforms Australia provides sequencing, data, and computational infrastructure that enables these transformative national cancer programs.
