About this Provider

Funded by the Australian Government, the Marine National Facility (MNF) is Australia’s dedicated blue-water research facility, enabling world-class research across our vast marine estate. The MNF was established in 1984 to provide Australia with a dedicated capability to conduct excellent ocean research for national benefit. It is national research infrastructure funded by the Australian Government and operated by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, on behalf of the nation.

Heading of content section

The Marine National Facility (MNF) offers Australian researchers the opportunity to apply for sea time on the impressive 94-metre ocean-class research vessel (RV) Investigator, which can deliver geoscience, atmospheric, biological and oceanographic research across Australia’s vast marine estate.

Allocation of sea time on RV Investigator is managed through a competitive application process open to Australian researchers and their international collaborators.

Aside from use of RV Investigator, the MNF also offers ship users an extensive range of scientific equipment, instruments and expertise to support voyages.

Services

Research delivered using MNF capability provides significant insights about our oceans, weather and climate, marine geology, and marine ecosystems.

Collectively, the MNF offers Australian researchers and their collaborators:

  • the multidisciplinary ocean-class research vessel (RV) Investigator
  • a suite of advanced scientific instrumentation and equipment
  • a collection of 40 years of marine data made freely available for the benefit of all
  • world-leading expertise in vessel and voyage management, and technology development.

The research done on MNF voyages provides important information that supports evidence-based decision making by government, industry and other stakeholders.

The MNF’s goal is to enhance the long-term viability and prosperity of the Australian marine environment, industries and society.

Expertise

The Marine National Facility (MNF) is supported by an expert team which oversees the operation of the vessel and works with vessel users. This involves managing the application process, voyage planning, voyage schedules, mobilisation and demobilisation. The MNF team work with technical staff and specialist groups to ensure voyages are delivered safely and successfully.

The team also supports marine and atmospheric research with specialist engineering and technology skills in instrumentation calibration, hydrochemistry, geophysical survey and mapping, physical collection systems (including geotechnical, open ocean and atmospheric systems), and data management.

Researchers can access fully funded grants of sea time on research vessel (RV) Investigator via three pathways: Primary, Supplementary and Piggyback Applications.

The MNF awards fully-funded grants of sea time for research on RV Investigator through a competitive application process assessed by independent committees. Applications are invited in an annual application cycle that begins with a call for Primary applications to build the Primary Voyage Schedule, usually two years in advance of the available period.

Following announcement of successful applicants through the Primary Application process, opportunities to fill any unused capacity in the Primary Voyage Schedule are then invited through a call for Supplementary applications and an expression of interest (EOI) process for Piggyback projects. All applications for sea time are submitted through our online application portal MFP (previously MAPS).
